Karien O’Kennedy – Online Communications Manager: Oenobrands

Karien O’Kennedy has a master’s degree in Microbiology from Stellenbosch University, South Africa. Her research focussed mainly on wine yeasts and wine enzymes. After university she spent 14 months learning about winemaking (and learning to speak English) working as a trainee in the American wine industry. Her first job in the South African wine industry was as a laboratory technician at a large co-operative winery. Her biggest breakthrough at this winery was to convince them to replace their microscope that still worked with a mirror (the type Louis Pasteur used; wait… maybe it was his actual model…) with a more modern version. In August 1999 she joined Anchor Wine Yeast as a technical consultant. She has travelled extensively to all the major wine producing countries in the world consulting to winemakers on their fermentations and wine styles. Karien is currently responsible for all internet related matters for the brands “New World Winemaker” and “Anchor Wine Yeast,” as well as providing technical support to South African winemakers. She has written various popular technical articles for both local and international winemaking magazines and is a keen blogger. Karien is also involved in the research and development of wine yeasts and yeast related products.

Karien lives with her (first) husband, Jannie, their daughter Bianca and son, John Nicholas Francis O’Kennedy. They have two Border collies: Annie and Boris.
